Bio

I have been teaching cello and classroom music for over 30 years, and I still genuinely love watching students grow. I have a special gift with primary-aged children – I work hard to make lessons fun, engaging and clear, and I’m confident they will enjoy their lessons and want to practise.

I also really enjoy teaching adults, and the extra layer of life experience and complexity that brings. Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning to the cello after some time away, you’ll find my lessons supportive, thoughtful and encouraging.

As well as being a committed music educator, I run the “Bach in the Dark” concert series, which keeps my own playing fresh and constantly feeds new ideas back into my teaching.

Teaching Info

Part of learning well and making real progress is knowing how to practise – not just what to play. From your very first lesson, I will guide you through how to practise regularly and efficiently, so you know exactly what to do when you open your case at home.

In each lesson we will cover:

  • Scales – to build solid technique, good intonation and a beautiful sound

  • Relevant music theory – always connected to the pieces you are working on

  • Aural practice – to train your ear and deepen your musical understanding

  • Pieces – carefully chosen for your level, goals and musical taste

I adapt my approach to each student: imaginative, playful and structured for primary-aged children; thoughtful, clear and collaborative for adults. My aim is for every student to leave each lesson feeling encouraged, challenged at just the right level, and excited to keep playing.
