Bio
Luis Saglie is an international concert pianist, composer, conductor and music educator whose career has developed across Europe, the United States, Latin America and Asia. Trained in Vienna and Los Angeles, he has undertaken extensive studies in Piano, Composition and Conducting, holding a degree in Composition with distinction. He brings more than 15 years of higher-education teaching experience in Australia, Chile and Ecuador, combining a strong foundation in teaching and performance with a broad understanding of music and its creative possibilities.
As a pianist and composer, Luis has developed an international career encompassing performance, composition and music education. His work has received significant recognition, including the Theodor Körner Presidential Prize, the Austrian Federal Government National Prize for Composition, and First Prize in the International Horn Society Composition Contest. His music is published by Universal Edition in Vienna, and his recordings include SAGLIE – Three Piano Sonatas, released by Da Vinci Classics. He has also served as a jury member and adjudicator for international music and composition competitions.
As a pianist, composer and conductor, Luis brings a broad understanding of music to his teaching. His students learn not only how to play, but how to understand music from within — its structure, language, style and expressive intention — and how to bring that understanding into performance.
Based in Sydney, Luis offers piano tuition to children, teenagers and adults at all stages of their musical development, from complete beginners to advanced students and professional musicians. He also provides specialised coaching in advanced performance and audition preparation. Drawing on his broad musical background, he offers further tuition in composition, music theory and musicianship, score analysis and conducting.
Teaching Info
No two students are the same, and Luis does not believe in teaching them as if they were. Over many years of teaching, he has developed his own approach, adapting lessons to how each student learns, their interests and what they need to progress.
His background as a composer allows him to create exercises and adapt musical arrangements specifically for individual students, particularly when addressing technical or musical challenges. He is also flexible with repertoire, encouraging students to study music they genuinely enjoy while ensuring that it supports their development.
Lessons are patient, encouraging and appropriately challenging, balancing technique, musicianship and musical expression. Students are encouraged to ask questions, develop their own musical ideas and become increasingly independent.
Above all, Luis wants students to enjoy learning, feel motivated by their progress and develop a lasting understanding and appreciation of music.
