Bio
Nicholas discovered his passion for singing and theatre at an early age, quickly developing a deep love for performance. During his school years, he played principal roles in high school musicals and plays, gaining valuable stage experience and building a strong foundation as a performer. He was also an active member of his school choir. Nicholas’s commitment to singing continued throughout his university years. He began studying voice seriously whilst at university in Melbourne, studying with Bettine McCaughan at the Melba Conservatorium. He then moved to Canberra, where he continued to perform in stage productions and where he furthered his vocal studies with the renowned baritone Ron McConaughey at the Australian National University School of Music.
By this stage, singing and theatre had become much more than hobbies, and Nicholas decided to move to Sydney to study voice and opera full-time. Within two years of moving to Sydney, he joined what was then the Australian Opera, now Opera Australia, as a casual member of the chorus. He subsequently gained a full-time position with the Opera Australia Chorus. After nearly a decade with Opera Australia, performing in numerous operas under the direction of internationally renowned directors and conductors, Nicholas chose to pursue other career opportunities. He continued to study voice, however, and sings with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.
Teaching Info
My work with both Opera Australia and Sydney Philharmonia, together with my extensive private vocal studies, has given me a deep knowledge and understanding of the vocal repertoire and the art of performance. I work with my students to help them develop a sound technical foundation and an appreciation of the repertoire and musical interpretation, while not taking my eye off the main reason they are there – the joy of singing. I prepare students for examinations and performances, including Eisteddfods. I teach students at all levels, from beginners to advanced, and teach both classical and contemporary repertoire. I am proficient in singing in English, German, Italian and French.
